I am hoping the following threads on betting will in some way be helpful and make one’s gambling more enjoyable. It may surprise people how much it can be improved by just using some common sense.

EXPECTATIONS:

The single most important thing is to realise your limitations and what you are trying to achieve. Because gambling is viewed as a weakness, there are not many who will own up to making a loss, thereby giving the impression to newcomers that by reading a few bits and pieces, they will be pulling in the money in no time. A good comparison to gambling is Golf, yet nobody expects to be able to play just because they have a set of clubs. There is a wide spectrum of skill in Golf, from myself, a fair weather nine hole pitch and putt man to a Pro-player, and a series of skill levels based on Handicap in between. On starting out, a player will practice and learn from others, eventually reaching a comfort zone, gambling is no different. Yes there are Pro gamblers, but your chances of becoming one are the same as becoming a Pro Golfer. There are lots of myths surrounding Pro’s and I’m sure that some people who talk about them have never met one. I have never met one that didn’t have a finger in another pie somewhere, which helped the financial cause. It’s certainly not the glamorous life it’s made out to be, basically because of the dedication needed. At the other end, we have the losers, which is not as bad as it sounds. I knew a man who was a very successful merchant banker who never won a penny, but enjoyed his gambling more than any. So winning shouldn’t be the initial goal but finding that comfort zone where you can enjoy your pastime. To find your comfort zone in gambling is no different to any other hobby, it will be governed by what you can afford and the time you spend at it. As with any hobby, going outside them parameters spells trouble, Golf is well known for its share of marriage break-ups and arguments.

Of course, resigning yourself to losing money doesn’t mean being stupid, a big part of gambling is the buzz of being right and making the best moves. To achieve that, you must be able to get the best odds available, so a number of accounts are needed, but remember not to have too much in there at any one time. A log or diary is very helpful for not only showing your profit/ loss, but also targeting areas that may need improving. There is no point in talking about websites for info etc as everyone differs in approach and time, but a simple post will get your questions answered. The one thing that may effect your betting is this Forum, I think it would be a mistake to blindly follow anyone as many things can go wrong, different spread, different books%, and its odds on you will miss a few winners. Don’t be sucked in to over betting because of an over enthusiastic post, try to read between the lines and add it to your own assessment. It goes without saying, never send money to touts etc for plays. There are some convincing cases made on here, but until you know better, play level stakes.

When I get a chance I will next write about how to evaluate bookies prices and find value in all bets. Also with help from others, bookmarking sites for each Sport.
